Charity is not the job of the unemployed.
It is not a search for fame or wealth, nor a source of entertainment for those with nothing to do. It is neither a way of making a name for oneself nor seeking of divine blessings.
There are those in positions of very high sounding employment, profit making businesses or places of power. And among them are people, not everyone but a few, to whom charity is an object of scorn. They often believe that people with nothing to do are those who are active in charity. Working for the wellbeing of those in need or are seeking for help in some way or the other, is an object of scorn for these self-proclaimed important people. The fact is that they haven’t the faintest of ideas of what charity entails.
Charity in general is generosity and helpfulness especially toward the needy or suffering and consists of aid given to those in need, understanding of the pains of others, and readiness to see what those suffering are going through and trying sincerely to find a solution for it. A charitable organization is an institution engaged in relief of those suffering from illnesses, poverty, and social discrimination and delivered through the active participation of those with a good heart and a real feeling of social responsibility. That then is what Charity is all about.
When we stop seeing beyond the four walls of your own mind and staying safely within the borders of self-interest, one feels superior to those who suffer, not realizing that given a few different set of situations they may well have been in the same or worse situation. They also forget the truth that it need just a small change of scenes to find themselves among the very people you stand to despise.
Donating is a selfless act, so giving time, effort, good will and resources to charity will do greatly to add to your self-esteem and self-worth. Unless you are a self-centered individual with only you in mind, you get greater sense of satisfaction and growth. If you have been involved in charity you would know that it feels good to help others and provide them with the help needed. It is the way beyond being imprisoned within you own self-created miniature world, where whatever you have gained will serve you no purpose after a period. To give to others at least a fair bit of yourself and your resources like time, effort and where possible money, ensures that you live not only in your circle but in the minds of many.
Charity to these people is often the collection of funds and misuse of the same. The reality, which they see not in their shortsighted ignorance is the fact that funds are only a very miniscule part of charity. Real Charity involves donation of Time, Effort, Skills, Creative Activities, Promotion of causes and Blood or other human organs. To the self-important person it is never in sight, simply because he does not understand the true meaning of social living and is constantly engaged with the feeling of being the centre of the universe, and unsighted of the realities around. Truly these people are the same everywhere and are the shame of any society.
Charity is the decision to be useful to the society, and thus to humanity. Charity is the choice to be helpful to those in need. It most certainly is not the job of the unemployed.
