Trust Deficit

Trust created human society.

Trust is one word that has five letter and five billion hearts yearning for it. Yes, the trust of a man and woman, created family. The trust in our elders, to know what is best for us, created communities. Trust of a people on the abilities and sincerity of a few leaders created nations. Belief that my money will grow in someone else’s enterprise, built up companies and the trust that it will stay safe and within easy access created banks. Every human system was built on trust.

Mankind has progressed and reached a pinnacle. We rush forth into an uncertain future with our trust in virtual realities, that don’t even exist, except as electronic signals. In cyberspace, housed in servers that are thousands of miles, away – are personal, corporate, and even vital healthcare data. Trust surely has come a long way.

So why then is it difficult to trust your sibling or friend. Why do spouses keep watching the other for traces or minute semblances of unfaithfulness? Why do the kids of today disbelieve their parents and teachers?

Maybe the answers lie in a realm of the mind which has now moved its trust quotient to the unreal. Many unrealities have now become realities, though we scarce understand how? We have the sketchy knowledge that electronic signals bouncing off unseen satellites, bring us sounds from places, literally a world away. Pictures crowd our television screen, that happen thousand miles away and these images are the real and believable while being in reality, unreal too. We do not know how, but we have trust in a system of payment, to purchase the gadgets from an online store. Our trust in devises has grown up thousand fold.

A human mind perhaps has only a limited quantum of trust. And perhaps we have put all of it on the gizmos, that we have very little to spare our brethren.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Loss of interpersonal trust has evoked a reaction of cheat in human minds. We do not think twice before lying to others. We seek excuses not to pay dues. We have no qualms in stealing from a public fund or a public trust. Yes mankind has finally taken trust off other humans and invested it on machine. And are reaping the deserved harvest.

When I trust my friend, I create faith in him – when I distrust him, he cheats…..
