Succumb not to disability

Disabilities can be devastating. Whether by birth or through the course of life, disabilities could deter a person’s progress and seriously hamper his life. These disabilities could be physical, mental or emotional and can affect people terribly. This is more so for those inflicted in life time than by birth, especially if it occurs in latter part of one’s life. The need to adjust to the loss of a faculty that aided in your everyday life can be a serious deterrent in life.

Yet we see and hear about people who have braved their disability and come out trumps in life. These are cases that inspire others who are afflicted with such disabilities. People like Stephen Hawkins stand as living testament to this iron willed resolve. He, with a motor neuron disorder, lived a complete life, committed to the cause of science. There are countless artists, writers, even sportspeople who have triumphed despite their disabilities.

What differentiates these icons from the common sufferer? How do these people with extraordinary disabilities come out with flying colors when most others sit back and do nothing but weep about their misfortune? How do these people continue to give to the world when other like them place more demands on the others?

Stories abound that project iron will powers that have beaten disabilities.

Here is a story of a person who battled his disability a came out of the dark tunnel, successfully.

Steve was born with cerebral palsy, making it difficult for him to make his muscles do what his mind tells them to do. All of his limbs are affected, and with his “athletoid quadriplegic” cerebral palsy, he cannot walk independently. He uses a motorized wheelchair to get around campus. His teachers never thought that he could complete his studies. Moreover, in addition to his physical disabilities he had severe learning difficulties and subjects like Mathematics was very difficult for him to learn.

Steve Ferreira, took six years to complete college. Yet when he came out of college he was a well-known international athlete – yes that is correct – an athlete who had won various awards ate Paralympic events. In 2012, Steve started a non-profit organization to advocate for people with disabilities. He speaks at local colleges and intends to cross the country to spread the word about what it’s like to live a disabled life.

Men like Steve Ferreira may not be known to the world as someone like Stephen Hawkins is, yet the spirit that conquers the disability and makes life worth living is what they carry in common. Their disabilities do not hold them down, they break down the barriers that the disability creates for them and live life without complaining.

Let not the tweak in your body engineering or mind mapping hold you back. If you choose to go ahead, nature will favor your choice. It is your world, as well !!!
