Almost a year ago, a group of us like-minded individuals came together to organize a significant social cause event. The stakes were immense, and we needed to transport some important people internationally. In our time of desperate need, I turned to Benny, the Managing Director of Holiday Shop Travel Agency. Normally, travel agencies earn a small commission on international flight tickets, but Benny, moved by the cause, booked the tickets without taking a single rupee upfront. The event turned out to be a grand success, and we received credit amounting to 14 lakh rupees. Six months later, we managed to repay most of it, but even now, 3 lakh rupees are still pending. Despite his own struggles, Benny continues to ask for the remaining money politely, never once showing frustration. It’s during such times of crisis that true character is revealed.
As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends leave footprints in your heart.” Benny has certainly left an indelible mark on mine.
Dennis, my dear friend and an integral part of Amicos, played a crucial role in managing this debt. He has always been someone who helps others, often to his own detriment. In Malayalam, we say “വഴിയെ പോയ വയ്യാവേലി എടുത്ത് വെയ്ക്കുന്ന ആളാണ്” – he is the one who clears the path for others, only to find himself trapped. His selflessness reminds me of the words of Albert Schweitzer: “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” Many people owe me favors and some have a sense of ownership towards me. They should have helped find the money since they benefited the most from the event. Yet, in my time of need, they were nowhere to be found. It was those who had nothing to gain but acted out of sheer humanity and cooperation who stood by me. The gainers, however, vanished like mist in the morning sun.
Despite the disappointments, a few friends came through for me. Manju Pillai, with her unwavering support, stepped in to help. Her kindness during this tough time will always be remembered. Sankar Keshavan, another trustee of swasthi too, showed his generosity, contributing to ease the burden. Sankar has always been a supportive shoulder for me, offering his help without hesitation. His steadfast friendship is a testament his incredible character. These acts of kindness from friends truly touched my heart. Both are Amicos.
One day, I was discussing the situation with Adarsh at Swasthi. He randomly mentioned K.M. Francis,my good Old friend and Amicos even though he didn’t know him personally, and said he felt that Francis would respond positively. Taking a chance, I reached out to my old friend. Knowing I was asking many people for help, Francis offered another lakh without hesitation. In that moment, amidst the turmoil, I felt a wave of peace wash over me.
“True friends are like stars; you can only recognize them when it’s dark around you.” – Bob Marley. These words echoed in my mind as I realized the true value of friendship.
Benny often sends voice messages when he is in a financial crisis. His pleas are heartfelt and sincere, a testament to the difficult situation he is enduring. In my own efforts to manage the stress, I regularly call my dear friend Sivaji jaganathan an Amicos to extend my leave. Sometimes, S.N. Raghuchandran Nair my friend and the president of Commerce and Industry also helps to secure those extra days. These requests for leave have become almost comical, a running joke in my circle.
Poor Albert Alex,an Amicos who introduced Benny to me, now finds himself caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. His predicament has become a source of amusement among us, a light-hearted moment amidst the chaos.
Reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the profound truth that life is a series of tests. Friendships are tested, and true colors are revealed. It’s a journey filled with unexpected kindness and disappointing betrayals. Yet, through it all, it’s the small acts of genuine compassion that restore our faith in humanity.
As I sit here, pouring my heart into these words, I am overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. There is sadness for the friendships that failed to stand the test, gratitude for those who came through, and a sense of philosophical contemplation. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes, the ones who seem most reliable may falter, while those we least expect to stand by us, do so with unwavering strength.
In the end, it’s the journey that matters, with its blend of comedy, tragedy, and unexpected turns. And as we navigate through it, we learn, grow, and find solace in the moments of genuine human connection.
