Nicolas Hulot, prominent environmentalist said “I don’t want to lie anymore. I don’t want to create the illusion that I have done anything but create noise and publicity stunts in the name of environment.”
There are the messiahs around, people without whom the earth will be lost. At least that is what they want you to believe. These are those who write poems and make great speeches. They cry hoarse over the decline in the environment and its current state. They talk of all the “right” things in this connection. But ultimately, one thing they ensure and always get correct is to make sure their pictures get published in the prominent papers and channels.
However if they were asked to show the wetness of the hands that plucked the weeds out or the dust on their palms that happened while planting a tree, one ought to honestly consider the chances that it just won’t be there. These Messiahs for the cause of protecting the ecology do so with just their tongues. They are in fact never there if something required them to stoop to pick. There are the nature poets and poetesses whose words and lyres have darkened the pages of great books and publications. But where have they actually gotten their hands wet, is a question none dares to ask them. In short all their work for environment is about getting their names and faces in prints or television screens. They have never even gotten burnt by the sun as they cleared the refuse that were dumped in the water bodies. They never really stood there in front of the axe that arrayed to chop the tree down. Them that did never ever have their names printed. They do not appear in television discussion and have really not given a damn for the publicity.
That then was were the poetess and nature writer and activists appear. They are there at the right moment and have the right word. The word are supposedly from their innate concern for what will happen to the earth, but then of course have no need really to get their feet wet, leave alone their fragile hands. The faces have to be in perfect shapes and color to be seen on the front pages and the television
If they really were concerned, it is time they stood in the hot sun pulled the refuse out and dirtied their feet. This now is nothing but advertisement, more correctly paid self-promotion. Nicolas Hulot at least had the honesty. Not so our nature messiahs.
