“The number of times I had stood by him, when he most needed…… And yet he has not even a word of good will for me!”
How many time have we heard this being mentioned at conversations? In fact we may even have said so, ourselves. This is the outcry of failed expectations. The hurt mind of someone who expected the sky and got the thin air instead.
The metaphor is in fact more accurate than it sounds. The sky is, in fact, nothing but thin air. As are the chances of you getting back in quantum, what you rendered. Every human mind is created with an in built accounting device that calculates the returns for any activity done. Early man climbed trees, not to take a peek over the neighbor’s wall, he did so to pluck fruits or steal eggs off the bird’s nest. Everything he did was with the motive of gaining something. It is this calculation that manifests itself as the expectations, even the failed ones.
So, justified it is….. Isn’t it? Well, not quite. The word help was devised to denote a voluntary service rendered for nothing in return. A concept developed by civilized man to get free service. The receiver of such service seldom has the mindset of a borrower, even with a sincere feeling of gratitude.
Does this tell you, the universal helper, a story? Well it is simple. Next time you set forth on that mission of universal mercy, make sure you turn off that mental calculator, don’t stand by expecting a mutter of gratitude or even a look of goodwill……C’mon man be the civilized dude, not the tree climber.
