Dissent, the fruit of egos
A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle. – Benjamin Franklin
Self – a miracle or a monster? The answer is Self-Respect or Ego. You carry yourself through your life carrying the weight of identity. Your name is the mirror you hold in your mind. The value you give that image is self-respect. However sometimes the image exceeds the mirror – that then is ego.
Hurt and bloated egos, have spoilt more relationships than all other reasons put together. A bloated self is burden to oneself. The more bloated it is, the less space there is for relationships. It saps your self of any sense of reality in your assessment of yourself. Thenceforth, there is only the need to fulfil pride.
Ego alone has driven good honest men to total destruction. Coming along as part of the package are the by-products of anger, slight and unreal self-esteem. This has been seen to hamper with a person in his efforts to excel, his search for truth. Many a brilliant mind has succumbed to the callings of egos.
The divide between ego and self-respect is very thin line. Both values self. When the value is unreal, it becomes ego. All you need to prevent yourself from slipping over the edge is to reflect upon who you are. Judging yourself critically is the key to being real or false to yourself.
The scourge of ego has done enough damage to humankind. Collective egos have brought about conflict and dissensions. Individual egos have destroyed families. If only man took a look at himself with an eye of a realist, many a sorrow may well have been avoided.
All it takes is a few minutes to look at yourself.
