What will COVID19 leave behind? Are we looking forward to a legacy of suffering in the wake of the latest version of global pandemic? There are many consequences feared and no area of human life can be deemed to be left untouched. Post COVID physical health, mental health and social health are being thoroughly scrutinised and conclusions being reached, revised and re-reached, by many an expert, almost on a daily basis. What was feared yesterday, has lost its fear quotient today, and newer fears keep popping out of the proverbial Pandora’s Box. Every sphere of health, social life, relationships, occupation and entertainment has taken massive hits. And one health hazard that the impact of the disease has is the deep dent it has and will continue on mental health of individuals and society.
“The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social isolation, economic recession etc. has already negatively affected many people’s mental health and created new barriers for people, especially people with mental disorders or are already suffering from mental illness and substance use disorders.” Quotes one study by a reputed American Research Team. There are real fears of greater human dependence on alcohol, narcotics and other substances. Suicidal tendencies are already seen as being on a rise. And most importantly there are real fears of rise in crime waves, following the loss of income and job opportunities all around the world. And finally, mankind which had learnt the value of a hug, will now have to quickly unlearn it. A firm handshake, pat on the back or a hug is no longer an act of social grace. It is but an act of murderous intent. The psychological impact on individuals, families and communities is hard to assess now. No one person or organization can roll out a solution.
It now needs collective brain work, to undo the damage the pandemic has done. No idea is a bad idea. No course of action too small. What is needed now to counter the psychological impact of COVID19 on people and the society need to come from the very same people and social groups. It is time to regroup, albeit online and have true brainstorming sessions on how to redeem the world we lost just a year ago. The society’s psyche cannot be allowed to suffer much longer and we all have to contribute. No just you or me but all. And then let’s listen to all, not just the experts. Someone surely has it hidden in their brains, waiting to be unearthed.
