Leadership Role of Women in a post COVID world

Eighth of March. 2021, as in every year before was observed as the world women’s day. The theme this year though was one that sought not social correction, but proactive creation. The aim of world women’s day has always centered around the seven principle so women’s empowerment (WEP), with emphasis on leadership of women in key post.

The WEP is basically centered in enhancing gender equality at work, where there is huge gender discrimination. This is not forgetting gender differences in the domestic and social fronts. However the importance of handing the reins over to women is most needed in the work front.

The seven principles as defined by UN were

  1. Corporate leadership is a key and integral part of making gender equality and women’s empowerment a top strategic priority
  2. Treating all women and men fairly at work aligns with international human rights principles
  3. Preserving and promoting the physical and emotional health, safety and wellbeing of their women employees. Sexual harassment and violence signify high costs to women
  4. Training for all employees about how the company is advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment
  5. Negative and diminished conceptions of women and girls are one of the greatest barriers for gender equality.
  6. Companies investing in community development programs to make valuable, effective and responsible contributions to gender equality
  7. Transparency and accountability are required for companies to uphold their commitments to gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community.

However the incidence of a global pandemic, while being a massive blow to humanity, could also be used to effectively influence the induction of women leadership in the community and work. The pandemic was met and being held at bay by the concerted efforts, cutting across the line of gender difference and could well be a starting point for true gender equality.

Women led enterprises, could well vie for frontline positions, especially in fields of healthcare, food and agriculture. Women have proven during the ongoing course of the pandemic that they can hold fort at domestic, corporate and social fronts, and ensure smooth continuity, better than their male counterparts.

This year’s World Women’s Day promises much. It is for us to make the best of it, and have results to show for eighth of March 2022.
